Vanuatu Licensed Financial Dealers (FDLs), in partnership with the Vanuatu Financial Services Commission (VFSC), have stepped forward to help rebuild schools and churches damaged by the 17 December 2024 earthquake.
A total of VT5.9 million has been raised through contributions from several VFSC-licensed financial dealers. The support will go towards assisting affected education and religious facilities across Port Vila and Efate.
Following the powerful earthquake that struck Vanuatu late last year, support from the financial sector is now reaching communities in need.
Survival School in Port Vila is the first to receive direct assistance, with VFSC and FDLs delivering materials including one ton of cement, wire, louvers, and other items to kickstart rebuilding work.
Principal Mr. Harkins Touguen expressed gratitude for the donation:
“Survival School is private. We only receive grants through Early Childhood Education for our kindy. This building was funded through Shefa Education Office, but unfortunately, our grant has not come through this year or last year. We’ve submitted four financial reports last year alone. So what you’ve brought today — the cement and building materials — it’s a big help to us.”
VFSC Commissioner Mr. Branan Karae said the donation reflects the financial sector’s commitment to the people of Vanuatu.
“This shows that the FDLs are not only here for business — they have big hearts to help our people. This partnership is an example of how institutions like VFSC can work together with the private sector to bring benefits to our communities.”
VFSC acknowledged the financial dealers for recognising the importance of education and churches, and for stepping forward to assist.
Over 20 schools and churches across Efate — including Port Vila — have been identified to receive similar support in the coming weeks as part of the ongoing recovery efforts.
