The Government has acknowledged the recent earthquake in Sanma Province as the second major earthquake in just over a year, following the first on December 17, 2024.
Authorities are now waiting to receive a rapid assessment report from the Provincial Disaster and Climate Change Committee, which is currently on the ground assessing damage caused by the 7.2 magnitude earthquake.
Once the report is received, the Council of Ministers is expected to meet this Thursday to decide on the next steps in responding to the disaster.
In a statement today, Prime Minister Jotham Napat said the government is relieved that there have been no human casualties following the powerful earthquake.
