Vanuatu Media loses veteran journalist Dan McGarry

Vanuatu’s media community is mourning the passing of veteran journalist Dan McGarry, whose work was widely respected both in Vanuatu and across the Pacific.

Known simply as Dan among colleagues and friends, he was more than a journalist—he was a mentor and a dedicated advocate for independent media. Over the years, he played a significant role in shaping the country’s media landscape.

Those who knew him best remember not just the journalist, but the journey. VBTC journalist Stevenson Liu recalls watching that path unfold.

“I’ve known Dan since he first came to Vanuatu,” he said. “He actually started out in IT before moving into journalism. Over the years, he became a strong voice for media freedom.”

One of the most challenging periods in his career came in 2019, when the government cancelled his work permit while he was overseas, preventing his return to Vanuatu.

“I was the president of MAV at the time. It was one of the most difficult moments,” Liu said. “We had to sit down with government ministers and try to negotiate on Dan’s behalf.”

According to Vanuatu Media Association (MAV) President Charles Sumbe, Dan was often among the first to report major events to the outside world, including natural disasters such as the 2024 earthquake and Category 5 Cyclone Pam.

In a statement, MAV said:

“Dan’s unwavering dedication to truth, accountability, and fearless reporting helped shape the media landscape in Vanuatu, reinforcing the vital role of journalism in our democracy.”

Dan also served as Media Director of the Vanuatu Daily Post, which described him as:

“A fearless investigative journalist, photographer, and software professional who made a lasting contribution to the development of the Vanuatu Daily Post.”

The publication added:

“He was a leading voice in Pacific journalism, driven by a strong sense of justice and commitment to the public good. He is survived by his wife and children. His passing leaves a profound gap in the media community.”

McGarry was reportedly in Papua New Guinea when he fell ill and was later medically evacuated to Australia for treatment.
