Young people throughout Port Vila and Vanuatu’s provinces are marking International Youth Day with a range of activities including panel discussions, debates, sports events, and awareness programs.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Localizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” focusing on how the global UN goals can be applied and adapted at the community level.
Joe Higgs Kalo, Principal Administrator of the Vanuatu National Youth Council, highlighted that the program provides an important opportunity for youth to discuss how the National Sustainable Development Plan (NSDP), often called the “people’s plan,” impacts them across vital sectors such as health, agriculture, employment, and other services. He emphasized the importance of extending SDG localization efforts to rural areas and ensuring financial support reaches provincial communities.
The Telecommunications Radiocommunications and Broadcasting Regulator (TRBR) is using the event to educate young people about their rights and responsibilities when using mobile phones, the internet, and telecommunications services. Activities include an online quiz, giveaways, and a robot demonstration developed by Ni-Vanuatu SMART Sistas as part of international events.
Northern Ward youth leader Thomas Butu said the event helps unite young people and reduce harmful group labeling, such as the use of nicknames like “Joss” or “Joslyns.” He urged parents, police, and the community to respect every young person’s real name to foster respect and unity.
“Many youths have been fighting against these divisions, and events like this encourage them to come together, shake hands, and respect each other’s names,” Butu said.
The celebration will continue until 12 August at Agathis Complex in Port Vila, culminating with a main parade and speeches by youth and stakeholders. Provinces are also organizing activities to commemorate the day within their communities.
