Tanna Hosts Independence Cup Football as Main Highlight of 45th Anniversary

24 Clubs from 7 Area Councils Compete; Over VT 1 Million in Prizes Sponsored by Local Businesses

The Independence Cup football tournament on Tanna is one of the main highlights for Vanuatu’s 45th Independence Anniversary, Public Service Commission Day, and the Arts Festival.

Seven area councils from across Tanna have come together, with 24 football clubs competing in the tournament.

VBTC Sports spoke with Anthony Tonny, the Football Administrator of Tafea Football Association, who said the tournament is strongly supported by local business men and women on the island.

“This tournament brought young people together to form 24 teams to play for the Independence Cup,” Tonny said. “The prizes are big – first place will get VT 500,000, second place gets VT 300,000, third gets VT 200,000, and fourth place will get VT 150,000.”

Matches are being played on two fields, with up to seven games scheduled each day. The tournament format includes group stage matches before moving to knockout rounds.

The preliminary rounds are set to finish tomorrow, 23 July, before heading into the knockout stage.

The grand final is scheduled for 29 July, as no matches will be held on 30 July due to other major celebration events.

The Tanna Business Association is the main sponsor of the Independence Cup tournament.
