The Luganville Municipal Counci is currently owed over VT68 million in unpaid property tax, according to Property Tax Officer Fred Manses.
During a public awareness session held around the CBD area, Mr. Manses confirmed that the majority of outstanding payments are from local taxpayers.
“It’s around 40-something million that ni-Vans don’t pay, but now it’s up to 69 million outstanding. We know life is hard, but we’re here to help. Even if it’s a small amount, just start paying,” he told VBTC News.
He said there are 2,018 properties and 1,918 registered owners — not including new developments. Property tax rates are 5.5% for commercial and industrial buildings and 3.5% for residential properties.
“With this outstanding amount, we should be collecting VT49 million in one year — but we’re only collecting VT20 to VT30 million, mostly from the CBD,” he said.
Mr. Manses stressed that property tax makes up over 50% of the Council’s total revenue.
“That’s why we’re raising awareness — so we can deliver services back to the people, pay wages, and renovate market stalls or council buildings. The Council does not make a profit — all income goes back into service delivery.”
