Government Invests VT18 Billion to Upgrade Santo’s Pekoa Airport

Vanuatu Government has committed VT18 billion for a major upgrade and expansion of Pekoa International Airport in Luganville, Santo — a key step in transforming Santo into the country’s top economic hub.

The project will enable Santo to accommodate long-haul international flights and function as a transit center for tourism, trade, and economic activity in the northern region of Vanuatu.

At the official ground-breaking ceremony yesterday, Prime Minister Hon. Jotham Napat and Minister of Infrastructure and Public Utilities Hon. Xavier Emmanuel Harry both emphasized that the upgrade aligns with the government’s long-term economic vision.

PM Napat said the new airport capacity will not only support larger aircraft but will also better connect Sanma Province to the world.

“This airport can accommodate big aircrafts and foreign police in Sanma Province. I appeal to residents to prepare for this change — this project is for them,” PM Napat said.

The upgrade project is structured into four key phases:

  1. Clearing and fencing the area,
  2. Runway upgrade and installation of modern lighting,
  3. New control tower and improvements to flight control systems, and
  4. Terminal upgrades, including emergency services like a dedicated airport fire brigade.

PM Napat also acknowledged that land issues have often delayed major infrastructure projects and urged communities to support progress.

The government will soon open bidding for contractors, with the successful bidder to carry out the full scope of the works.

The extension includes a 1,000-meter runway upgrade, making it one of the most significant infrastructure projects to support economic growth and boost tourism in the northern provinces.
