Erromango Set to Revive Football League After 12 Years

rromango Island is looking forward to launching its own football league to encourage young people to register under the Tafea Football Association.

The announcement comes as part of the Tafea Day celebrations this week in the southern part of the island.

After many years, the people of Erromango have united with one goal — to revive football on the island, which currently has only two area councils both ready to bring the sport back to life.

The move follows growing interest among young people in football.

During Tafea Day celebrations this week, one of the main highlights was the plan to open a football league so that Erromango players can have a voice in the Tafea Football Association.

The South Erromango Area Council hosted a football tournament at Williams Bay to mark the event, which also aimed to prepare for the launch of the new league.

Speaking to VBTC Sports, Area Administrator Joe Nare Mete emphasized the importance of creating the league to support youth development and strengthen community unity through sports.

The tournament ended on a high note, with clubs competing for cash prizes and a trophy, wrapping up the Tafea Day celebration in joy.

Erromango has not had an organized football league since 2013, and this year’s initiative marks the island’s renewed commitment to reviving the sporting spirit and reconnecting with the Tafea Football Association.
