Vanuatu–Australia Agreement to Strengthen Humanitarian, Cultural and Security Cooperation

Vanuatu and Australia have advanced their bilateral partnership with the signing of half of a new agreement last week in Tanna, which is expected to cover several key sectors of national development.

In a media statement yesterday, Prime Minister Hon. Jotham Napat confirmed that the agreement includes major pillars such as humanitarian support, cultural exchange, political and economic cooperation, climate action, and security.

“Inside this agreement there are several pillars that are covered in terms of humanitarian assistance, cultural and political connectivity, economic transformation, security, and climate cooperation. These matters were resolved during the meeting in Tanna, and there will be a signing soon between the two leaders,” Prime Minister Napat said.

He further expressed satisfaction with the outcome of discussions, despite some initial concerns raised over sovereignty issues.

“I am happy with the outcome, and everybody knows there must be a win–win situation. Some issues were raised that could have undermined our sovereignty, but both parties were able to resolve them in agreement,” he stated.

The final signing of the agreement is expected to take place soon between Prime Minister Jotham Napat and Australian Government.
