TI Vanuatu Calls for Gov’t Transparency

Transparency International Vanuatu has raised concerns over the Government’s lack of response to a petition from civil society groups calling for greater transparency and accountability in the use of public funds.

More than a month has passed since civil society organisations (CSOs), led by the Vanuatu Association of Non-Governmental Organisations (VANGO), submitted strong recommendations to the Government. The recommendations came after wide consultations with communities across the country, including chiefs, women’s organisations, youth groups, and churches.

To date, there has been no official response from the Government.

Dr Willie Tokon, CEO of Transparency International Vanuatu, expressed disappointment at the silence and urged the Government to treat the call with seriousness.

“The office has not received any response yet. We understand public servants are busy with PSC Day preparations, but if they truly respect the people, they should respond,” Dr Tokon said. “This is the people’s money. They have the right to know how it is being used.”

The civil society petition calls for reforms to improve public financial management and transparency in government expenditure. VANGO, which coordinated the petition, said it represents the voices of over 200 member organisations nationwide.

“We are ready to engage and understand the Government’s position,” said VANGO Chairman. “But we must receive information from them so we can report back to the people. That’s what they expect.”

Civil society organisations continue to stand firm on the need for the Government to improve communication and accountability in how taxpayer money is managed.
