Port Vila Mayor Calls for Tsunami Siren as Main Market House Reopens

After seven months of closure following the devastating earthquake in January, the Port Vila Market House has officially reopened but with a strong call from the city’s leader for urgent disaster preparedness.

During this morning’s reopening ceremony, Port Vila City Council (PVCC) Lady Mayor, Hon. Jenny Regenvanu, used the occasion to renew her call for the national government to invest in a tsunami siren system. She described it as a vital public safety measure, especially in the wake of recent natural disasters.

“Our people need to be warned early. We cannot wait until another disaster strikes. It’s time for government to invest in a proper tsunami siren system,” Lady Mayor Regenvanu said.

The reopening of the Market House marks a significant milestone for the capital, as it brings back one of the city’s major revenue sources and vital services for residents and vendors alike.

“Port Vila Market House is more than just a building it’s a lifeline for so many families. Its closure affected not only our economy but the day-to-day survival of many in our communities,” said the Mayor.

Stalls began filling up again this morning as market mamas returned, visibly happy to resume selling their produce and handicrafts.

Full operations are expected to resume tomorrow, with vendors and staff gradually transitioning back into a normal routine.

The Port Vila City Council says the reopening is a sign of progress and community resilience, and it is hopeful the city will continue to recover and rebuild stronger.
