The Ohlen Freshwind Development Committee has raised 301,035 vatu to purchase 45 solar street lights for their community.
The money was raised through a music show held at the stadium, organized by the committee.
Committee Chairman, Kere Sylvester, said the initiative shows the community’s determination to not always depend on government support.
“Some places wait for the government, but here at Ohlen we want to take our own steps, with only small support from government,” he said.
Treasurer of the committee, Jimmy Alvanua Harry, said the solar lights are intended to improve safety in the community at night.
The official launch of the street solar lights took place on Sunday in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Johnny Koanapo, Port Vila MP Marie Louis Milne, two Ohlen councillors, and community members at the Ohlen Freshwind field.
In her remarks, MP Milne said the new street lights will make a real difference.
“These lights will improve security, give safety to our children, and reduce fear when walking at night. They are solar-powered, free from the sun, and environmentally friendly,” she said.
During the launch, the Ohlen Council of Chiefs and the Development Committee also signed an MOU to work together in addressing community issues.
