The Vanuatu Institute of Technology (VIT) has officially opened its Skills Competition in Port Vila, featuring more than 200 participants from various schools and training institutions across the country.
The competition brings together students and trainers to showcase their talents in different trade areas, including Electrical, Hospitality, Carpentry, and several others.
Trainer from VIT’s Business Management Department, Stanley John Fred, said the competition aims to identify outstanding talents who could represent Vanuatu at future regional events.
“We have representatives from VNPF and the Ministry of Finance helping to oversee the competition. One of the main goals is to identify champions who can be coached and prepared for future regional competitions, including those in Australia,” he said.
Trainer from Acomvets Torgil Campus in Lolowai, East Ambae, John Garae, said the event is a valuable learning experience, especially for students from the northern islands.
“This is the first time students from the northern islands have taken part. I encourage all youth in Vanuatu to join training programs like this — they provide important skills that can help secure future employment,” Mr Garae said.
Participant from Ambae, Ruben Sese, said he was proud to take part and test his skills.
“I’m not nervous — I just need to stay confident so the judges can assess my work properly. I’m happy to take part in this activity,” he said.
Organizers say the competition is not only about winning but also about inspiring more young people to develop new skills and contribute to the country’s workforce.
