Reconstruction of the Melsisi Catholic Church on Central Pentecost is set to take place this year, five years after Cyclone Harold damaged the building.
Parish representative Herve Niptick confirmed to VBTC News that 25 tonnes of cement have recently arrived on Pentecost and will be combined with other materials like wire for the rebuilding work.
“Hopefully the preparation will be repaired this year, but we need support from Melsisi in Santo Vila and contributions from Catholic believers across Vanuatu. The cement is already here, and some men have volunteered to help, so thank you,” he said.
VBTC News also confirmed that Pentecost MP, Hon. Charlot Salwai, has pledged 20 tonnes of cement and additional materials to support the reconstruction.
Parish representative Niptick added that a fundraising event will take place this week alongside the Penama Day celebrations.
The Melsisi Catholic Church has over 1,000 members, spread across 11 nakamals in Central Pentecost 2.
