Government Announces Phase Two of Nguna Road Upgrade

The Government has announced the second phase of the Nguna road project, which will begin next year from Utalangi Village.

Prime Minister Jotham Napat made the announcement during the launch of the new 2.7-kilometre concrete pavement road on Nguna this week.

More than 1,000 people will benefit from the new road.

Speaking in Malaliu Village on Wednesday, Prime Minister Napat said:
“This gives me the opportunity to announce stage two, which we will start at Utalangi Village upwards to start next year.”

The announcement follows community appreciation for the new road and requests for the road to reach more villages.

The new 2.7-kilometre road runs from Udapoa Village to Matoa and was constructed by local contractors Kellen and Malekula Timber Construction, who employed 40 local workers.

Minister for Infrastructure and Public Utilities, Xavier Emmanuel Harry, said the road will provide easier access to essential services.
“This road will give access to people with good drainage, which is a development that the people of this island needed many years ago.”

Project engineer Maele Kalworai said the design ensures the road can withstand disasters.
“Big thanks to the people of Nguna and the chiefs for working with me to overcome challenges faced from September 2024 until now.”

Australia’s High Commissioner, Max Willis, expressed satisfaction with Australia’s support of 185 million vatu.
“Priority goes to the work and Ni-Vanuatu businessmen, and the project will make sure that the benefits remain in Vanuatu.”

MP for Efate Rural and Nguna native, Fred Samuel, also welcomed the new development.
“With this new road, children will have access to roads, schools, and the health centre.”

Nguna is one of the first islands where the Gospel reached, and communities say they are grateful the Government has not forgotten them.
