Biosecurity Forum Strengthens Efforts to Protect Vanuatu from Pests and Trade Risks

Acting Director of the Biosecurity Department, Lilly Fatdal Antfalo, says a three-day forum organized by the department will help strengthen Vanuatu’s protection against pests, diseases, and trade risks, while supporting sustainable agriculture, food security, and safe trade.

The forum brought together shipping agents, customs brokers, aircraft and postal agents, exporters, humanitarian and diplomatic representatives, meat retailers, importers, butchers, and government agencies.

Director Antfalo said the annual forum reviews the department’s work, addresses operational challenges, and plans activities for 2026.

“This program is an annual event where our partners contribute to our plans and activities each year. This year, we’ve brought together stakeholders involved in meat and animal inspection with our border agencies to share insights, experiences, and constructive criticism that can bring positive change to our operations and standards,” she said.

Key discussions at the forum focused on institutional and policy alignment, meat inspection and veterinary services, plant biosecurity, and border operations.

Officials said the forum also looked at strengthening border control, compliance, documentation systems, and coordination with Customs and the private sector.

Director Antfalo added that the forum is an important platform to review past work, identify challenges, and plan for the future. The department hopes the event will lead to a clear 2025–2026 action plan, improve coordination across all divisions and partners, and strengthen capacity in meat inspection, plant health, and border operations.
