A woman who struck her husband with a knife causing his death has been been sentenced to four years imprisonment by the Supreme Court.
The court heard that in May this year, the woman and her daughter were preparing pandanas leaves for mats when her deceased husband, who was drunk, returned home and started assaulting her.
At the time, the woman was working with a small knife, which she used to stab her husband on the chest.
According to the Supreme court, the man attacked his wife after she told him she had not seen money he claimed to have left on their table.
“The defendant was still holding onto the small knife and when the punches continued she struck the deceased with the knife on his left chest,” Justice Dudley Aru stated.
The couple’s 12-year-old child was present during the incident and witnessed everything.
Although the man was rushed to hospital, he did not survive the attack.
The woman was charged and pleaded guilty to one count of intentional assault causing death.
Justice Dudley Aru said the woman pleaded guilty and expressed remorse for her actions.
She also performed a customary ceremony to her husband’s family, which led the judge to reduce her sentence by three months.
