Whooping Cough Cases Reported in Shefa Province

The Shefa Provincial Health Office has confirmed this week, cases of whooping cough (pertussis) in Shefa Province, particularly on Efate.

Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) of Shefa Health along with other provincial health offices has been activated since the Ministry of Health officially declared a national outbreak on August 19th .

Health Authorities Urge Parents to Protect Babies and Pregnant Mothers.

And warn that the disease poses great risk to babies who have not completed their full course of vaccinations, as well as pregnant mothers.

Authorities are calling on the public to take extra care and seek medical help immediately if they develop symptoms.

People are also advised to avoid close contact in crowded public places if unwell.

The main symptoms of whooping cough include:

  • Persistent, severe coughing fits that are hard to stop
  • Difficulty breathing or catching breath after coughing
  • Fever, especially in children

Health experts emphasize that early treatment and vaccination are key to protecting vulnerable groups and preventing further spread.
