VMSA Moves to End Harassment at Sea

The Vanuatu Maritime Safety Authority (VMSA) is taking strong steps to eliminate harassment on board ships, with a new law expected to be introduced next year.

Speaking during the International Day of the Seafarer celebrations in Port Vila, VMSA Commissioner Less John Napuati said the theme for this year, “My Harassment-Free Ship”, reflects the agency’s growing focus on crew welfare.

“VMSA is preparing legislation to propose amendments next year that will make it law to stop harassment on board,” Napuati said.

While the law is being developed, Napuati encouraged seafarers to report any form of harassment directly to VMSA.

“If there’s any harassment happening on board, you can report it in writing or call us directly on 114. It’s simple, it’s free, and we will deal with whoever is responsible,” he said.

He added that Vanuatu has now ratified the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), which sets minimum standards to protect the rights of seafarers.

“The implementation of the MLC will be led by VMSA, and we expect the new laws to come into effect sometime next year,” he said.

Napuati thanked all local seafarers for their contribution to the industry and assured them that ensuring their safety and wellbeing remains a national priority.

The Maritime Labour Convention is a key international framework adopted by the International Labour Organization to promote decent working conditions for seafarers across the world.
