Ten Young Women Graduate as New Leaders

Ten young women leaders from across Tanna have graduated with certificates in leadership after completing CARE Vanuatu’s six-month Young Women’s Leadership Program. The ceremony, attended by family and friends, celebrated the graduates’ commitment to lead and serve their communities.

The participants hailed from Central, Southeast, West, Southwest, and East Tanna. Supported by CARE Vanuatu’s Gender Equality Together Project and funded by the Australian and New Zealand Governments, the program aimed to empower young women with skills and confidence to create positive change at home and in their communities.

The event began on a high note with video messages from the Australian and New Zealand High Commissioners. Australian High Commissioner Max Wells greeted the audience in the local Tanna dialect, saying “Rawit laplapien”—a gesture that drew smiles and applause. He congratulated the graduates, emphasising their resilience and growth throughout the program.

“Today is all about you—a day to celebrate a wonderful achievement,” he said. “You overcame challenges, broke through barriers, and grew into the leaders you are destined to be. Australia is proud to have played a small part in this journey. Thank you for your perseverance and active engagement. All the very best with your next adventures.”

New Zealand High Commissioner Nicollas Simmonds echoed these sentiments in his video message, praising the graduates for their strength and potential. “Please lead with respect, courage, and kindness,” he urged. “Uplift other women and girls. You are the voice of change—stand strong and make a difference. Congratulations on your graduation; this is the start of your new journey.”

According to Linet Rose, Project Officer for CARE Vanuatu’s Tanna Gender Equality Together Project, the transformation was remarkable.

“At first, participants were shy and would not speak out, but after all the workshops, they were able to share ideas and have confidence in themselves. During the graduation, six young women confidently stood before the audience and shared testimonies of how the program changed their thinking and equipped them with leadership skills,” she said.

Graduates spoke passionately about their experiences. Sabrina Namatak reflected on the program’s impact:
“I realise that this internship has built the foundation I need to move forward into full-time work. I’ve not only gained practical skills but also the confidence to take on new challenges.”

Alice Jack emphasised the importance of collaboration:
“Men and women must work together to succeed. Leadership is not just a position but a responsibility to serve others. The program inspired me to believe in myself and work toward my goals.”

For Sisiliana David, the program was life-changing:
“It helped me discover my potential, build confidence, and develop leadership skills I never knew I had. Without it, I might not have learned to believe in myself or see the positive changes I can make in my community.”

The graduation marks a significant step toward gender equality and leadership development in Tanna, showcasing the power of education and mentorship in shaping future leaders.
