Some seasonal workers overseas are asking for inappropriate photos and videos from their women partners before they send them money.
This is an example of cases received by the Vanuatu Women’s Center (VWC) from women and girls throughout the country.
This year’s White Ribbon Day theme is “United to Stop Digital Violence Against Women and Girls.”
The number of women and girls facing abuse or violence is increasing significantly.
During the launching of the 16 Days of Activism and International Day Against Violence Against Women, the Coordinator of the Vanuatu Women’s Centre, Tatavola Matas, said some of this violence is happening through technology or social media.
She said, “There are partners working overseas that ask their partners here to perform sexual activities before they send their money. In some instances it is a prerequisite, like you must perform this sexual activity in order for me to send money over.”
She said that last year, over 5,400 women sought help from the Vanuatu Women’s Centre across the country due to domestic violence.
“It is over 5,400 clients, and about 1,400 clients are new clients, they have never come to use our service. There is also an increase in forms of abuse on social media like Facebook, WhatsApp, and IMO, which are the main platforms we use in Vanuatu.”
Reflecting on this year’s White Ribbon Day theme, the Acting Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, Chief Inspector Tony Berry, spoke about the abuse women and girls are facing online.
CID said, “Leaders need to start protecting women online. Let us work together to build digital literacy, safe reporting pathways, and community awareness.”
Minister of Justice, Youth, and Community Services, Job Andy, who also oversees the Department of Women, respond has to match the increasing violence.
The Minister said, “We must protect our women and girls in the digital space, but also where they live and learn. As Minister, I will try to strengthen our laws against those who cause harm.”
Annual the 25 November advocators and stakeholder gather globally, to speaks out against the different forms of violence against.
In Port Vila the day began with a parade through town to Feiawa Park, where speeches and other activities took place.
