Over 100 Merelava Baskets Showcased at Torba Mini Vanuatu Made Tradeshow

More than 100 locally made baskets from Merelava will be on display at the two-day Torba Mini Vanuatu Made Tradeshow, which begins today on Motalava Island.

Four women from Merelava arrived this week with their products to take part in the event, showcasing a variety of handmade baskets, mats, laundry baskets, and walking sticks woven from pandanus leaves and bush rope.

Helen Salvemal, one of the participants, said life on Merelava is challenging, but weaving provides an important source of income for families.
“Everybody knows life is hard in Merelava. We need money to survive, and I am very happy to sell my products to support my family,” she said.

Among the group is a woman with a disability who cannot speak, but has strong skills in weaving. A friend speaking on her behalf said she is proud to showcase her talent and contribute to the community.

Preparations for the Torba Mini Vanuatu Made Tradeshow are continuing with strong support from the local community. The event will run for two days, starting today.
