Reports indicate that staff at the Ministry of Education and Training are facing strong words and intimidating behavior from some members of the public on social media and within communities, following the ongoing teachers’ strike.
Newly appointed Director General, Cherol Ala, stated that this week the Ministry, together with its partners, will continue reviewing additional claims submitted by members of the Vanuatu Teachers Union to progress payments.
DG Ala expressed concern that the intimidation directed at Ministry staff is affecting their ability to perform their duties.
“Priority for education now is for teachers to return to classrooms. With the threats being made, I call on the citizens of Vanuatu for calm. I want to see officers working without fear, so the Ministry of Education can maintain its reputation,” DG Ala said.
She added that despite the challenges and negative attention surrounding the teachers’ strike, collaboration and cooperation from the public are essential to securing the future of education in Vanuatu.
“I recognize the issues arising from the teachers’ strike and recent publications, which are very concerning, but we want collaboration from the public. If everyone cooperates, I believe the future of our country—especially for our children—will be safeguarded. First and foremost, teachers must return to classrooms so that education continues,” she said.
