Offender with disability sentenced after evading law for 4 year 

A 28 year old male with disability found guilty of indecency with a 2 year old girl was finally sentenced to 2 years and 8 months imprisonment.

The offender was sentenced at the Supreme Court early last week, bring an end to his 4 years and 2 months deliberate evasion of police and the law.

He initially plead guilty to a count of unlawful entry into a dwelling house contrary to section 143 (1) of the Penal Code and a count of act of indecency with a young person under the age of 15 years contrary to section 98A of the Penal Code.

The 2 counts carries a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment and 10 years imprisonment respectively.

According to Supreme Court Judge, Josaia Naigulevu, the offender has been on bail and were required to appear for sentence on the 29th March 2021.

He failed to turn up and  from that day avoided the police and law by constantly moving to and from Efate Island to elude arrest.

While the Court acknowledges that the offender have disabilities- profound hearing loss and difficulty with speaking, the judges did not consider that it warrants any further discount to his sentence.
