Legendary beach volleyball star Miller Pata, known across Oceania as the “Queen of the Sand,” has made her debut as head coach for Vanuatu’s senior women’s beach volleyball team — and led them straight to gold at the Pacific Mini Games 2025.
Pata coached the dynamic duo of Majabelle Lawac and Sherysyn Toko, who clinched the gold medal in a dominant performance at the Games in Palau. This victory marks a major personal achievement for Pata, who has transitioned from elite athlete to mentor and coach.
“This is the first gold medal I’ve won as coach for Team Vanuatu,” Pata said. “In the past, we won silver in New Zealand and bronze in China. But this gold in Palau is a special milestone for me.”
The win confirms Pata’s growing reputation as a leader off the court, just as she was on it during her active playing years. Her experience and tactical guidance were key to Vanuatu’s victory.
Looking ahead, Pata says the next major event for her team is an international tournament in Taiwan, with the players scheduled to depart on the 14th of this month for competition beginning on the 17th.
