Merelava Villagers Turn to Weaving as Copra Shipping Slows

For more than 10 years, people of Merelava’s Aota village have relied on weaving and other local products to make a living, following the decline in copra shipment from the island.

Local producer, Aldrin Casper, told VBTC News that weaving laundry baskets, pandanus baskets, axe handles and walking sticks has become their main source of income.

“It has been over 10 years we don’t do copra anymore, we only live like this. There are only certain number of us weaving these products to earn little money but it is not easy. If we cannot find a way to sell them, they will just stay here,” Casper explained.

He said the weaving process is also a challenge depending on the season.

“Rainy season is the best time to weave, but in sunny weather the products break. In the rain we use rope, but sometimes it cuts our hands. Still, we must keep weaving,” he added.

Casper said it takes about three months to complete one laundry basket, and when enough products are ready, the Tuwetu Association President arranges a boat to transport and sell them at the headquarters in Sola.

Despite the challenges, the Merelava community continues to showcase resilience, turning traditional skills into a way of survival.
