Health Officials Reassure Public on COVID-19 Vaccine Safety

Health professionals in Vanuatu are reassuring the public that COVID-19 vaccines are safe, following concerns about potential side effects raised by members of the community.

The Ministry of Health, in partnership with health research organisations such as the Burnet Institute, is working to address misinformation and fears surrounding the vaccines.

Speaking to VBTC News, Kali Ameara, a representative of the Burnet Institute, emphasised that the purpose of rolling out vaccines is to reduce risk within the community.

“Vaccination is necessary, and while side effects can vary from person to person, the goal is to protect the community. The risks are far greater if people do not get vaccinated,” He said.

Ben John Taura, Manager of Family Health within the Ministry of Health’s Public Health Unit, also addressed the concerns.

“Side effects can occur with any vaccine or medication. The effects are minimal and the benefits far outweigh the risks. Our health workers have been trained to manage any reactions if they occur,” he explained.

VBTC News understands that public suspicion remains, particularly regarding some deaths that are believed by some to be linked to the COVID-19 vaccine.

Authorities have not confirmed any direct connection and say investigations continue.
