Gaston Chocolate Achieves HACCP Certification, Opens Doors to New Markets

Gaston Chocolate has achieved Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) certification, a key international standard that will allow the company to expand into new markets abroad.

For the past four years, the Vanuatu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) has been supporting local businesses like Gaston Chocolate to prepare for export. This week, VCCI launched a new Catalyst Program, designed to help even more businesses meet international requirements and access overseas markets.

Olivier Fernandez of Gaston Chocolate said obtaining certification was not easy, but commitment from his team and support from VCCI made it possible.

“Since now we have the hazard certification, we can reach other countries where before we only focused on Vanuatu,” he explained.

Gaston Chocolate sources cocoa directly from over 360 local farmers, and also incorporates kava and coconut to create unique flavors. The company processes around nine tonnes of cocoa each week, with staff dedication playing a major role in its success.

VCCI worked with Quality Solutions to ensure Gaston Chocolate’s facilities met HACCP standards.

Dion Palu of Quality Solutions said, “We worked with Gaston to develop documented systems, train staff and make sure facilities meet international standards.”

Through its export-ready programs over the last four years, VCCI has supported businesses with funding opportunities, international expos, and critical certification.

Phalguni James, Manager of the Export Ready Program at VCCI, said the lessons from this experience have shaped the new Catalyst Program.

“During these years we found out there have been gaps. The Catalyst Program will deliver tailored support – grading, training, mentoring, and certification – to help businesses get ready for both domestic and international markets.”

With the launch of the Catalyst Program, VCCI is hopeful more Vanuatu-made products will follow Gaston Chocolate’s path and secure a place in global markets.
