The 2025 PVFA Fit & Fierce Football Competition kicks off this week in Port Vila — a major new initiative using football as a tool to advocate against Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in Vanuatu.
A joint partnership between the Ministry of Health and the Port Vila Football Association (PVFA), the competition aims to raise awareness on the impacts of NCDs, which remain one of the leading causes of death in the country.
Launched under the theme “Yumi Faitem NCD long Kaontri”, the competition brings together six teams from the Super League, six Premier League teams, four top teams from League 1, and other clubs including women’s teams.
The official draw was held yesterday at the Port Vila Stadium conference room in the presence of Health Ministry officials, PVFA leadership, and team representatives.
Further team draws are expected to take place next week.
Director General of the Ministry of Health, Shirley Tokon, highlighted the deeper message behind the competition:
“Health is a complex sector. It touches every person from birth to death — unlike other sectors, it affects all of us. That’s why using a powerful tool like football to educate people is so important.”
The event also aligns with the 50th anniversary celebrations of Vila Central Hospital (VCH).
VCH Manager Paul Makikon said the competition is more than just about football — it’s about building health ambassadors.
“They will advocate with us at VCH, and Albert will serve as the liaison officer to help coordinate training and community outreach.”
PVFA official Robert Calvo announced the match schedule for this week:
- Thursday: Shepherds vs Naka, and Seveners vs Malampa
- Friday: Iestewalu vs North Efate United FC, and Erakor vs Galaxy FC
- Saturday: Latokou vs Mauriki, Pango Green Bird vs Tupuji Imere, Penama vs Yatel, and Tafea vs Ifira
The grand final will be held on August 23, marking the 50th anniversary of Vila Central Hospital.
