Earthquake Victim Praises Cash Aid: ‘I Know What I Need

Junior Kila, a registered workman whose home was severely damaged during the 17 December 2024 earthquake, says the Cash Transfer Program by the Vanuatu Red Cross Society is the most effective support he has received since the disaster.

“This is the first time I’ve received this kind of assistance,” Kila shared. “When you give me cash, I can choose exactly what I need to help rebuild my life — unlike material distributions where I might not use half of what’s given.”

Kila is among 79 workmen included in the first round of the cash transfer program launched by the Vanuatu Red Cross. In total, 800 verified recipients will receive VT20,000 each, accessed via the MyCash App on Digicel, allowing the organization to inject over VT16 million into affected communities.

One local builder, also affected by the quake, praised the Red Cross response as the most immediate since the disaster.

They came first with cooking utensils—plates, spoons, and saucepans. Now, with this MyCash support, it’s even better.”

Another affected by landslides added that such assistance should be standard after disasters.

“The landslide destroyed my garden and left us without food. This help really means a lot.”
  • The Vanuatu Red Cross confirmed that the cash transfer program will continue throughout the week, reaching more households in need as part of its ongoing post-disaster response.
