The Sanma Counselling Centre has reported a rise in child abuse cases across the province, with more than 15 new cases recorded between 2023 and 2024.
Community educator at the centre, Viran Molisa, said many children are experiencing different forms of abuse, including physical, emotional and sexual abuse.
According to the centre’s report, cases involve children aged between 8 and 17 years old, with the majority facing sexual and physical abuse.
Molisa also revealed that corporal punishment is still common in schools across Sanma Province.
“We have cases from Bompua, Santo East and other schools where students have reported being beaten with timber or sticks, leaving bruises on their bodies,” she said.
She stressed that the growing number of abuse cases calls for parents, communities and schools to work together to stop the problem and provide children with safe environments.
Molisa further highlighted the importance of families and communities reporting cases quickly to ensure that victims receive urgent counselling and support.
