The Civil Aviation Authority of Vanuatu (CAAV) is reminding the public that the use of fireworks anywhere in the country can pose serious risks to aircraft safety and flight operations if not properly controlled.

Under Civil Aviation Rules Part 77, activities that may interfere with airspace safety — including fireworks, laser lights and high-intensity lighting — are strictly regulated to protect aircraft during all phases of flight.

CAAV Director, Ms Grace Naparau, said fireworks have the potential to disrupt airspace and compromise flight safety, regardless of where they are used.

“Fireworks under our civil aviation rules in Vanuatu have a high potential to affect airspace and flight operations. We are reminding the public that anyone intending to use fireworks must first seek approval from the Civil Aviation Authority and comply with all safety requirements to protect aircraft operations,” Ms Naparau said.

She emphasized that aviation safety is a shared responsibility, especially during the festive season when fireworks are commonly used.

CAAV also raised concerns about the use of laser lights and high-intensity lights directed at aircraft, noting that such actions can seriously endanger pilots and passengers.

“We strongly urge the public not to use laser lights or direct high-intensity lights toward aircraft. These can cause temporary blindness to pilots and compromise passenger safety, particularly during critical phases of flight such as take-off and landing,” Ms Naparau said.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vanuatu is calling on the public to comply with aviation safety regulations and cooperate with authorities to ensure safe and secure air travel for passengers, pilots and crew across the country.
