CAAV Urges Public to Help Prevent Wildlife Hazards on Runways

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vanuatu (CAAV) is warning the public of the serious dangers posed by wildlife on airport runways during flight operations.

Animals such as cattle, pigs, chickens, dogs, and birds have increasingly been spotted near or on runways, creating potentially life-threatening hazards. These wildlife incursions can result in aircraft damage, aborted take-offs or landings, and, in the worst cases, accidents that endanger both passengers and crew.

CAAV is appealing to communities living close to airports to play their part in ensuring aviation safety. This includes maintaining fences, keeping livestock away from airport boundaries, and immediately reporting any sightings of animals or birds near runways to airport authorities.

Director of CAAV, Grace Naparau, stressed the importance of community cooperation in tackling the issue.

“Safety is our top priority. We need the support of our communities to help us maintain safe flight operations. The presence of animals on runways can lead to dangerous situations that put lives and aircraft at risk,” Naparau said.

CAAV confirmed that it will work closely with community leaders and relevant stakeholders to raise awareness and implement measures that will help reduce wildlife-related hazards.

The authority has reiterated its commitment to ensuring safe skies across Vanuatu, calling on the public to remain vigilant and proactive.
