Biosecurity Vanuatu Partners with Village Police Chiefs to Enforce Boat Curfew on Epi to Prevent Beetle Spread

Biosecurity Vanuatu is partnering with village police chiefs on Epi Island to introduce strict control measures, including a curfew on boat and ship movements after 5PM, in a bid to stop the spread of the destructive Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB) to other islands.

One of the key risks identified by Biosecurity officers during their recent surveillance mission is the possibility of CRB being unknowingly transported by night-time marine traffic. To counter this, the department is calling on the support of village police and chiefs, through the Area Council, to help draft and enforce a local bylaw restricting vessels from departing Epi after sunset.

“Ships leaving Epi at night pose a serious risk of spreading the beetle to other islands,” said Senior Biosecurity Officer Leisongi Bulesulu. “We are working closely with local authorities to prevent any movement after 5PM, which is a critical part of our containment plan.”

The measure is part of a larger VT1.5 million surveillance and control operation currently underway on Long Island, Epi, where traps have been set and awareness programs are ongoing. Biosecurity officers have also introduced fungus-treated artificial traps and sanitation efforts in breeding hotspots to contain the spread of CRB.

This local enforcement approach adds a new layer of community-driven biosecurity protection, aiming to safeguard livelihoods and prevent further agricultural damage across Vanuatu.
