The Vanuatu Police Force has officially welcomed two new fire trucks donated by the Government of Australia to strengthen the country’s fire service.
Police Commissioner Kalshem Bongran received the new trucks during an official handover ceremony, saying the event highlights the ongoing cooperation between the two countries to improve public safety.
“The Vanuatu Police Force and its Fire Service have faced many challenges in responding to fires and other emergencies. The addition of these new fire trucks will enhance safety, improve efficiency, protect property, and better serve our people,” he said.
Australian High Commissioner, H.E. Max Willis, emphasized the importance of the trucks to local communities.
“More importantly, these trucks will support our communities in times of danger. Each truck can carry six fire officers; the larger ones can hold around 2,500 liters of water, while the smaller ones can carry about 2,000 liters,” he said.
Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. Andrew Napuat, reaffirmed the mission of the Vanuatu Mobile Force to protect lives, safeguard property, and respond to emergencies. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the fire service in the past and said it is time to give more attention to the department.
“Whenever there’s a fire incident, we receive a lot of criticism from the public. Maybe now it’s time to put more focus on the fire department and start making improvements,” he said.
In his official address, Minister Napuat added that the event was about more than just receiving new equipment.
“Today’s event is more than just the receiving of equipment. It is a demonstration of partnership, trust, and shared commitment between Australia and Vanuatu in strengthening public safety and security.
This fire engine truck is not only a much-needed resource for our fire service but also a symbol of friendship and cooperation.
The Vanuatu Police Force, through its Fire Service, faces many challenges in responding to emergencies ,from fires in our growing urban centres to incidents in our remote communities. The addition of this modern fire engine will significantly enhance our capacity to respond swiftly, effectively, and safely, helping us save lives, protect property, and serve our people better.
“To the officers of the Fire Service: this truck represents both an opportunity and a responsibility. Let us use it with diligence, professionalism, and dedication, always remembering that it stands as a tool to serve and safeguard our communities.” Minister Napuat concluded
Fire officers from the Vanuatu Mobile Force have already begun training on the new trucks to learn how to operate them effectively.
The new fire trucks will strengthen Vanuatu’s fire service capacity and reflect the strong friendship between Vanuatu and Australia.
