Over 90 young people from Luganville communities attended a one-day training on sexual reproductive health (SRH), organized by the Vanuatu Family Health Association. This marked the first time the organization brought youth together to raise awareness about HIV, STIs, and making safe choices.
The training covered essential topics in SRH, including understanding one’s body, making informed decisions, and staying safe within their communities.
Anita Pascal, Youth Officer at Vanuatu Family Health, highlighted the importance of the session:
“One thing we discovered is that there is a high rate of STIs in Luganville. We came to educate youth about safe practices, for example, how using condoms can prevent STIs and HIV. Simple knowledge like this can help them inform their friends as well.”
Statistics show that around 60% of young people in Vanuatu are affected by STIs such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and syphilis. Pascal also explained that misleading information on social media often discourages youth from accessing health services due to fear of judgment or breaches of confidentiality.
“Youth may be afraid to go for checkups, fearing that a nurse will inform their family or friends. Our session aimed to provide truthful information, so young people feel confident to seek help and make safe choices,” Pascal said.
The training created a safe space for youth to ask questions, share experiences, and gain knowledge that empowers them to make positive decisions for their sexual health and future.
