Young Ni-Vanuatu Seafarers Set Sail for Global Maritime Careers

Two young men from Vanuatu, Morgan Tom (23, from Tongoa Island) and Kelepi Fa Bakomu Mototua (19, from Ifira), are breaking new ground as they embark on international maritime careers.

After successfully completing their Pre-Sea training at the Pacific Centre for Maritime Studies (PCMS) in Suva, Fiji, the pair are preparing to join Swire Shipping, one of the Pacific’s leading shipping companies. Their achievement marks a milestone in proving that Ni-Vanuatu youth can secure skilled, well-paid maritime jobs overseas—offering a strong alternative to seasonal work programs abroad.

Andrew Bohn, Chairman of the Vanuatu Shipping Association (VSA), described the moment as historic:

“Morgan and Kelepi are showing other young Ni-Vanuatu that they can export their labour not just as unskilled workers, but as trained seafarers in the global maritime industry. This is a proud moment for our shipping industry and a signal that careers at sea are possible and rewarding.”

Both Morgan and Kelepi have completed their STCW Basic Safety Training and will return to Fiji for refresher training, medical exams, and their first Swire vessel placements. They will begin as Ordinary Seamen (OS) and Wipers, with the goal of qualifying as Able-Bodied Seamen after six months of sea service.

This milestone was made possible through collaboration between the Vanuatu Shipping Association, Vanuatu Maritime Safety Authority, UK High Commission, Market Development Facility, Swire Shipping, and Alpha Pacific Navigation.

Looking ahead, VSA plans to expand the program by sponsoring more trainees for pre-sea training, launching outreach campaigns in schools and communities, and actively recruiting female candidates.

“Together, these steps will strengthen Vanuatu’s role in the global shipping workforce, create sustainable employment, and build a pathway for more young Ni-Vanuatu to succeed in international maritime careers,” said Bohn.
