Why Go Overseas When the Soil Pays More? Malekula Farmer Proves Wealth Is at Home

While many Ni-Vanuatu are signing up for seasonal work overseas, one man from Malekula is showing that success can grow right here in Vanuatu , from the soil beneath our feet.

Remo Rueben,  watermelon farmer, says he makes more money in three months at home than most people earn working abroad in the same time.

At the Fruit Festival in Port Vila, Remo stood proudly beside his 4,000 watermelons, harvested from two hectares of land . If all are sold, he’ll earn around VT9 million , proof that farming can be both profitable and life-giving.

“Many people go overseas for seasonal work for three months, but I stay in Malekula and make more money in the same time,” he said with a smile. “Money and life are in the soil.”

Remo says he left his old job as a contractor because he found greater joy in the land.

“Farming is easier and healthier. Today, many people get sick from processed or shop-bought food. But when you grow your own food, you stay healthy.”

His message to young Ni-Vanuatu is clear: you don’t need to go far to find opportunity , it’s already in your hands, in your soil.

He officially launched his farm this week, with Prime Minister Charlot Salwai attending the ceremony. His next goal is to build a fruit juice factory in Malekula, where he can process and export local fruits across Vanuatu and the Pacific.

Still, he faces challenges like a lack of tractors, poor road conditions, and limited market space in Port Vila. But he believes events like the Fruit Festival will help strengthen connections and provide financial support for local farmers.

“This festival is important because it brings farmers together. We must work together to make our three-month harvests successful.”

For Remo, the message couldn’t be clearer , while others fly overseas to seek income, he’s proving that real wealth grows right here at home.
