Watermelon farming is helping a woman from South West Santo build a better future for herself and her family.
Cindy Mele, a mother of two from Tanavusvus in South West Santo, grows watermelons to support her family’s livelihood.
She plants watermelons throughout the year and regularly travels to the Luganville Market to sell her produce.
This week, she made her second major harvest, bringing over 100 watermelons to the market.
Cindy Mele:
“I took 100 fruits to sell, and I expect to earn around VT100,000. Last week, I sold some and after paying expenses — for transport, workboys, and other costs — I went home with VT130,000.”
Mrs. Mele encourages other farmers to plan well and work hard to achieve their goals.
Cindy Mele:
“I have a goal, to build a house. I’ve already bought a banana boat and a deep freezer for my brother, and now I’m saving to buy a truck.”
However, she said transportation remains a big challenge for her and other women who sell produce at the market.
“My garden is far, so I need to buy a truck to help with transportation,” she said.
Despite the challenges, Mrs. Mele remains hopeful that her watermelon sales will continue to grow and help secure a brighter future for her family.
