Since the December 2024 earthquake, the tourism industry has remained one of the most affected sectors in Vanuatu.
Eight months on, the Vanuatu Tourism Office (VTO), with government support, is rolling out major campaigns to promote Vanuatu globally, carrying the key message that the country is open to international visitors and investors.
Speaking on VBTC’s Stret Tok discussion program, VTO Chief Executive Officer Adela Aru stressed the importance of consistent domestic connectivity through the national airline as a way to build investor confidence.
“The expectation is that the Vanuatu Tourism Office must give assurance of confidence. One of the key areas we highlight is having a national airline that provides reliable domestic connectivity. We carry feedback from both locals and foreign investors saying we need this service,” Ms Aru said.
She explained that international arrivals from Jetstar, Virgin Australia, and Qantas must be supported by reliable onward domestic connections to Tanna and other islands.
“When daily flights land in Port Vila, visitors must be able to connect immediately to the islands. Reliable connectivity builds investor confidence, allows small tourism businesses to operate, and ensures trust in the system. When that connectivity is disrupted, the impact reaches not only small operators but also big businesses,” she added.
The VTO says strengthening the national airline’s domestic services is crucial for the recovery of tourism and the wider economy.
