The Vaturisu Council of Chiefs on Efate will celebrate its 50th anniversary this Friday in Mele Village, marking half a century of leadership, advocacy, and the protection of custom and community.
Chief Mariwota of Nguna, a council member, said the milestone reflects not only the passage of time but also the council’s determination in addressing disputes, strengthening community voices, and guiding people through challenges.
“Over the past 50 years, the Council has worked hard to resolve boundary issues and to uplift the voices of our communities,” he said.
The Golden Jubilee will be both a celebration and a moment of reflection on past achievements, while also charting the way forward for chiefs and communities. One of the priorities raised is the need for a proper office to support the council’s administration.
“We don’t have an office. It’s good that people are talking about this now, so we can see what must be done,” one chief explained.
While rooted in Efate, Vaturisu has also worked closely with chiefs from other islands to ensure consistent leadership at every level. The council continues to value its partnership with the Malvatumauri Council of Chiefs and has acknowledged the Vanuatu Government for recognizing the crucial role chiefs play in maintaining social stability and development.
“This has been a long journey since independence in 1980. Today, Malvatumauri and the Port Vila Council of Chiefs stand together to address challenges facing Vanuatu,” the council stated.
The celebration at Mele is expected to draw chiefs, government leaders, and community representatives to honor 50 years of service and to look ahead to the future of traditional leadership in Vanuatu.
