The Vanuatu Tennis Federation is giving young athletes a chance to shine through its Talent ID Testing program, currently being run in 14 government and private schools across Port Vila. The initiative is part of the federation’s wider development programs and aims to identify promising students who can progress in the sport.

Technical Director of the Vanuatu Tennis Federation, Lorrain Bainimataku, highlighted the success of the program so far.
She said, “At the beginning of the year, we started Talent ID Testing in different schools, and so far we have worked with around 14 schools. We go into schools, run multiple tests, and then the students who perform well are selected to join our Tennis Club. Since June, we have completed tests in all schools and seen a big improvement. We’ve noticed a real impact—full participation in our Saturday morning sessions, with up to 70 students attending.”

The Talent ID Testing program allows the federation to engage students directly in schools, provide structured lessons, and select those with high potential for further training. Bainimataku added that the approach has helped beginners catch up quickly and maintain interest in tennis.

“So far, in September, we have maintained consistent participation on Saturdays,” she said. “Compared to last year, we have more registrations, and students remain motivated to come down to the tennis club and continue playing. The program gives all interested students a chance to participate and develop their skills.”

The program is part of a wider effort by the Vanuatu Tennis Federation to grow grassroots tennis and create opportunities for students to engage in structured sports activities. Selected students now attend regular training at the tennis courts every Saturday, building skills and fostering a love for the game.
