A team from Vanuatu’s junior tennis squad is in New Caledonia this week to compete in the 2025 Junior Tournament.
Vanuatu has taken a strong team to New Caledonia, with 11 national junior players from the Under-17 and Under-18 categories, both boys and girls.
The draw took place on Monday before the matches began. Competing countries include Vanuatu with 11 players, American Samoa with three, Papua New Guinea with two, Fiji with one, and host New Caledonia with the largest number of players.
According to the junior team coach, Teva Maurice, matches started on Monday. As of today, they are playing the last round before tomorrow’s finals. Today’s games will decide whether Vanuatu reaches the finals.
After tomorrow’s finals, another junior competition will begin this Saturday in Paita, before the Pacific Youth Championships 2025 kick off next week.
Teva says this long period of training and competition away from home is a valuable chance for the players to gain experience and exposure by playing against other Pacific athletes.
The team is expected to return to Vanuatu on August 25.
