Over 20 Sea Transport Operators Trained in Outboard Engine Repairs

Over 20 sea transport operators have participated in an Automotive Small Engine Servicing Certificate 1 training in the Torba Provincial Area this month.

This is a community-based training recognized by Vanuatu Skills Partnership in collaboration with Vitimboso Rural Training Centre.

Following past experiences where many boats faced engine problems while out at sea, Vanuatu Skills Partnership stepped in to provide support for sea transport operators. The training aims to equip over 20 operators with the knowledge to repair and maintain outboard engines in case of issues while on the water.

The course includes 14 units that each trainee must complete, in line with VQA requirements, covering both theoretical and practical aspects.

Mr. Rowley Woleg, the lead trainer, said the course focuses specifically on outboard engines.

“We focus specifically on outboard engines. The course runs for about five weeks, with 14 units. We recruited 21 learners to meet VQA requirements, followed by assessment of both theory and practical skills,” he said.

Assistant trainer Pierre Noel explained that after completing each unit, trainees move straight to practical sessions. Next week, the learners will work hands-on to dismantle, repair, and maintain an outboard engine.

“Next week, two weeks are solely for practical work , opening the engines, rectifying issues, and repairing them so customers can enjoy proper service,” he said.

One of the trainees, Karl Arti Dingley, said the training has helped him learn how to handle engine problems while out at sea.

“This training makes me think ahead about the safety of myself and passengers, and helps me understand the engines, their issues, and all,” he said.

The Vanuatu Skills Partnership recognized this training as essential to help sea transport operators, particularly those involved in fishing and passenger transport, to gain knowledge on operating outboard engines efficiently.
