Nambangasale School Buildings Still in Ruins 10 Years After TC Pam

Ten years after Category 5 Cyclone Pam destroyed Nambangasale Presbyterian Junior Secondary School on Tongoa Island, the school’s damaged buildings remain unrepaired , despite five separate assessment visits over the years.

Long-serving teacher, Mr. Kalsav Donald, shared the school’s ongoing struggles during the launch of a new solar system by the National Green Energy Fund this week.

When Cyclone Pam struck on 14 March 2015, it passed directly over Tongoa, tearing off the entire roof of the school’s dining hall and severely damaging the library — once described as the “heart of the school.”

“After the twin cyclones, we never received any recovery project. This is the first one we will receive,” Mr. Donald said.

He added that while government and parliamentary delegations had visited the school multiple times and carried out five different assessments, no reconstruction work had ever begun.

“There were two teams from the government that came and did assessments, but nothing has been done till today. Look at our library , that was the heart of the school where learning always took place. We’ve waited so long for this time. I know it’s God’s plan you came today, and you can see with your own eyes our situation,” he said.

Mr. Donald raised these concerns again this week to Director General of Climate Change, Paul David, and his delegation from the National Green Energy Fund, urging that Nambangasale School not be forgotten in any remaining recovery projects or funding.
