The Commissioner of Labour, Muriel Metsan Meltenoven, has called on businesses to ensure they follow legal procedures when implementing redundancies.
In a recent statement, Ms. Meltenoven emphasized that businesses with more than 10 employees, intending to lay off over 10 staff members, must notify the Commissioner of Labour in accordance with Section 67 of the Employment Act. She reminded employers of their legal obligation to pay out workers’ entitlements during redundancy situations.
“When redundancies occur, employers are required to fulfill their legal responsibilities and provide appropriate benefits to affected employees,” she said.
Ms. Meltenoven also confirmed that she has already met with several businesses in the Central Business District (CBD) to discuss redundancy plans and explore solutions. “We hope to make progress on this matter by the end of the week,” she added.
In addition, the Labour Department is currently conducting a survey to assess the extent of job losses. According to a report from the Data Recovery Operation Centre, over 600 businesses and more than 6,000 workers have been impacted by last month’s earthquake.
