Govt to Pay Over VT154M to Families of Deceased Teachers

Out of over 3,000 teacher-related claims submitted to the Government for payment, 96 have been verified as valid, all of which belong to teachers who passed away while still actively serving in the education sector.

The Government, through the Ministry of Education and Training, has agreed to pay these claims following a thorough verification and assessment process.

The total amount the Government is responsible for paying stands at VT154,653,384.

VBTC News has been informed by the Ministry of Education that in some cases, delays in clearing payments for teachers who died in service happen because the individuals entitled to receive the money on behalf of the deceased lack proper legal documentation to prove they are the rightful recipients.

VBTC understands that under the Administrator Probate legal framework, which covers death-in-service claims, the Government is obliged to pay entitlements to the legal representative of any permanent Government officer who dies while in service.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Education, it was confirmed that for all 96 accepted claims, those representing the deceased must provide legal documents proving they are eligible to receive the money on behalf of the late teacher.
