Authorities Warns Public as Bushfires Reported in Port Vila During Ongoing Dry Season

As Vanuatu continues to experience prolonged dry conditions, authorities have raised concerns following several bushfire incidents reported in Port Vila on Tuesday afternoon.

These fires grew closer to nearby buildings and infrastructure, with thick smoke covered parts of the Stella Marie area, causing visibility problems along the main road to Teouma.

Residents at Stella Marie, believed the fires was started by a farmer clearing his garden around 1pm. By 4pm, when VBTC News arrived at the scene, the fire was still active.

Later that evening, another fire was reported behind the Rapid Electrical building near the Joint Court area. So far, there have been no reports of damage or injuries, but officials remain concerned about the potential risks as dry weather continues.

Damien Hinge from the Department of Environment warned that such burning activities are unsafe and can cause serious harm.

“There’s only one proper place for disposal of rubbish- the Etas Bouffa landfill. Secondly, there are risks of bushfires. When you burn rubbish without proper control, you destroy animal habitats by burning trees and grass.

“Another risk is that burning rubbish causes nuisance to people. People are affected by the smoke and the smell,” he said.

He also reminded people to be cautious about where they dispose their cigarette filters.

Damien added that anyone found responsible for causing environmental damage through such activities could face investigation from the police and penalties from the department.

Climate Forecaster, John Mangau from the Meteorology Department, reminded the public that the dry season is not over yet.

“The dry season should have ended around August or September, but because of climate change, resulting to the change of the season, we are still experiencing high temperatures and strong sun,” he explained.

Authorities are urging the public to avoid lighting fires, especially during this dry period, to prevent emergency situations and protect both communities and the environment.
