The Vanuatu National Provident Fund (VNPF) is spending over 106 million Vatu to demolish parts of its headquarters that were damaged during the 17 December 2024 earthquake.
Of the total cost, 101 million Vatu will be covered by insurance, while VNPF will contribute 5 million Vatu from its own funds.
In an interview with VBTC, VNPF General Manager Paul Kaun said the Fund quickly relocated its operations to three temporary sites following the 7.3 magnitude earthquake, allowing business continuity without any job losses.
“There are not any staff that lost their jobs, were laid off, or affected in terms of employment,” Mr. Kaun confirmed.
Demolition works are currently underway at the Ward Brunett Building. The first phase includes dismantling the Utilities Regulatory Authority (URA) office, followed by the upper floors and internal areas of the VNPF main building.
Mr. Kaun said a structural engineer will be brought in to carry out a full assessment once the demolition is complete.
“VNPF will engage a structural engineer to do a detailed assessment of the building — to determine whether it is structurally sound and suitable for remodeling. If the assessment indicates otherwise, there will need to be further structural changes or even a full rebuild,” he explained.
Meanwhile, VNPF has secured three temporary locations to continue its operations while demolition works proceed.
The Fund remains committed to maintaining services to its members during the reconstruction process.
