Head of State, H.E Nikenike Vurobaravu Moliunavanua and Prime Minister, Hon. Charlot Salwai Tabimasmas are facing motions of no confidence as political tensions rise. The Speaker of Parliament has accepted both motions, which aim to remove these key leaders from their positions.
The motion against Prime Minister Salwai, submitted by the Opposition, has received nine signatures and requires a simple majority to pass. This motion is scheduled for discussion in Parliament tomorrow.
The motion targeting President Vurobaravu has gained more traction, with 19 signatures from opposition members. This motion needs at least two-thirds of the electoral college to be approved, along with the presence of at least five provincial presidents during the vote. According to Article 36 (3) of the constitution, the motion to remove the president will mature two weeks after its being lodged.
The Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Seoule Simeon, has confirmed that both motions are in order. As the situation develops, the upcoming discussions are expected to be critical for the future of Vanuatu’s leadership.
